1950s Home in Hove
Ray and Lenka had been living in their 1955 semi-detached home for 10 years when they decided to extend their home. They had no experience of building work and weren’t sure where to start. Their 30 year old boiler needed replacing, but they weren't sure how to factor this into their plans, given that the larger footprint of the planned extension could increase the amount of energy needed for heating.
They started by speaking with an architect to consider their options, but he wasn't able to advise them on who to speak with to do the work. Lenka instead undertook her own extensive research on builders and trades people, creating a list who they met and invited to quote.
Ray and Lenka had to decide whether to manage every trade themselves individually or find someone who would be their main contractor. They chose Bright Green Homes as their main contractor, partly because they had been recommended by another tradeperson but also because they itemised their quote. This made it clear what they would be paying for - nothing was hidden - and made keeping to a budget much easier for Ray and Lenka
